Have you ever had a midlife crisis?
Maybe not midlife, but definitely a crisis. Feeling lost and looking for a path with purpose I was passionate about, I spoke to my high school band director for some sort of direction- really looking for someone to just tell me what I should do with my life. And that’s when my band director said to me, “you like music, you’re good at writing, why don’t you just do both and write about music?”
At that moment I thought I heard angels singing. Turned out to just be the school choir in the next room, but either way I finally had an idea of what I wanted to do with my life.
Following my epiphany I started college that fall at the County College of Morris, graduating with a degree in music performance. Later transferring to Ramapo College of New Jersey, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Music, with a concentration in Music Industry and Music Studies.
Which brings us to the next phase in my crisis, my senior year capstone project. During college, it’s easy to become focused on what you’re doing in the moment, and forget about the light at the end of the tunnel- which is precisely what happened to me.
I had no idea what to do for my senior project, should I do an EP? I’ve been writing songs and playing the guitar for years. But I had to ask myself, “What is my passion?” “What excites me?” And that’s when I remembered my high school days, and the conversation I had with my band director. I love music, I love writing, why am I not combining the two? And that’s when The MIC, The Music Insight Column was born.
So welcome to The MIC!
I’m Stefani M.C. Janelli and this is my passion project. Here, I write about albums, the stories behind the songs, and the artists who wrote them.
If you want to hear more about me...keep reading.
If not, let’s take a look at some music.
While I clearly like to listen to music a lot, I also like to play music. I’ve been playing the guitar for 15 years at least, writing my own songs, and secretly played the flute all throughout elementary and high school.
Besides music, I’m also a poet, coffee, and nap enthusiast. When I’m feeling more active, I do like to visit the outside world to hike, travel, and eventually would like to visit all of the National Parks.
Enough about me, let’s read about some music.
